Barbituates affect the GABA receptors in the brain and bring about a reduction in the CNS activity in the brain. This can result in extreme intoxication, lethargy and even death by overdose of the drug. Chronic bartituate users may appear irritable, be prone to periods of agitation or display a lack of emotional control. They may also display neurological symptoms during withdrawal and also when taken to excess. Like benzodiazepines, barbituate dependency usually takes longer to establish and withdrawal symptoms can include seizures.
The withdrawal symptoms you may experience vary significantly depending of which substance you have been using. The onset of these symptoms also vary widely as well. Barbituate withdrawal symptoms may not appear for three to four hours or may be delayed up to eight hours. Regardless of how long it takes for the onset of symptoms, the symptoms will almost always get worse and may not reach the peak of their severity for three to five days & then last 1-2 weeks.
